Garden and Pool

Most people who love their gardens are also very conscious of the environment. So here's some detailed advice about how you can keep your garden eco-friendly.

  • Don't overwater. Make sure you know the proper water needs of your lawn and plants; in many cases, they don't need as much as you think.
  • Minimise water loss via evaporation by watering your garden only in early morning or late evening.
  • Don't allow sprinklers to water your streets, driveway and garage. Only water the garden area.
  • Install water efficient irrigation devices. Micro and drip irrigation and soaker devices are very efficient.
  • Don't leave sprinklers or hoses unattended.
  • Regularly maintain your sprinklers so leaks are fixed rapidly.
  • Check hose connectors to make sure plastic or rubber washers are in place, as they prevent leaks.
  • Use an automatic shut-off nozzle on your hose, and adjust it down to a fine spray.
  • Group plants together based on similar water requirements.
  • Avoid over-fertilising your lawn as this increases the need for water.
  • Don't throw leftover ice into the sink; place it at the base of your plants.
  • Avoid purchasing recreational water toys or elaborate water features that require a constant flow of water.
  • Don't wash areas that can be brushed clean!

If you have a swimming pool:

  • Install a cover on it at night to minimise evaporation.
  • If you have an automatic refilling device, check your pool periodically for leaks.
